Veterans' Oral History Project
See also Oral History Link.
As a result of Ireland's official position of 'neutrality' during WW2 the scores of thousands of Irish citizens who were permitted by the Irish Government to enlist in British and Allied Forces were ignored on their return and unfortunately their story was not recorded. Many of this generation have gone to their eternal reward but happily many are still with us. It is our intention to capture their story.
It is a major project but we have started and 10 veterans in Mayo have now been DVD'd for posterity. These recordings are not exclusively WW2 veterans but priority is given to them.
A School Headmaster Mr. Chuck Dunford, a film cameraman Mr. Risteárd Ó Dómhnall and I want to now record veterans in the 25 remaining counties (NI has been completed by others). There are problems:
A.Time is very much against us.
B. We cannot do this project from within our own resources.
However, we can and will do it if we are resourced. If you can assist or if you know of someone or some institution that can assist please contact me at info@militaryheritagetours.com Paypal donations via the same email address are accepted also.
Below please see examples of some outstanding veterans we have recorded. Others we would have recorded have passed on since contacting them. We need sponsorship.
Thank you.
