West Cork Tour 2005
War of Independance actions at Kilmichael, Crossbarry and Rosscarbery
Civil War ambush - Béal na Bláth

This tour commences in Clonakilty, Co. Cork.
On arrival the group is introduced over a welcome drink at 1800.
The guest lecturer then gives an outline as to the events upcoming and a brief on the military and political situation that pertained prior and during the War of Independence, and the particular situation in West Cork, the terrain, topography and the concept of guerrilla warfare.
The following morning we travel to Kilmichael, the scene of one of the most famous and controversial ambushes of the War of Independence.
We adjourn for a light lunch in the 4 Alls bar at Sam's Cross.
Then on to Woodfield and the home of Gen Michael Collins.
The original home is standing, the newer home having been burned by the Essex Regiment.
We then visit Rosscarbery and the site of the former RIC Bks., which was successfully attacked during the war.
If time permits, a quick visit to Clonakilty cemetery and back to the hotel for dinner. The next morning we visit the tragic Béal na Bláth, scene of the ambush where General Collins was killed during the Civil War.
