Veterans' Oral History Project
The collection of the oral testimonies of WW2 veterans (and later campaigns) continues here in the West of Ireland.
We have now launched a box set of ten DVD's of Mayo Veterans' oral history and it is indeed a collection of major interest. The criterion was that the veterans were born in Mayo or live in Mayo and served in whatever uniform.
The following veterans have now been recorded and we offer them to you at exceptional value:
Flying Officer Geoffrey Salisbury RAF MBE, Croix de Guerre, Bomber Command WW2
Geoffrey was shot down over Rheims while commanding a Halifax Bomber. He survived his jump (his co-pilot was killed) and made contact with the Maquis. He was ordered to remain in France working with the Maquis unit (most of whom were later massacred) until after D Day.
F/Sgt Elisabeth Murphy, RAF Medic Gulf War 1. Elisabeth describes why in the 1980's she joined the RAF. She talks about attitudes to her being Irish, attitudes in Mayo towards her being in the RAF and her life as a medic serving in Gulf War 1.
Lt Col Dennis McCarthy ADC to General De Gaulle
Dennis is a survivor of 21 combat missions, three insertions by submarine and 18 by parachute. He was for example involved in the sabotage of the V1 and V2 launch sites at Piedmunde.
The O'Byrne brothers (3 of 8 Westport siblings all of whom served during and after WW2, three survivors participate in our project)
Michael served with the Irish Guards and two his brothers in Cavalry units.
Lt Terry Murphy, a Queen Alexandra's Nurse who served in Burma and India. She was strafed in the Mediterranean and en route to the theatre of operations and nursed many POW's on their release from Japanese captivity.
Sgt Alan Robinson RAOC, veteran of Tobruk. He survived many German air and ground attacks gives a very philosophical testimony of his war.
Mrs Gerardine Cusack, wife of PO Jack Cusack RN WW2. Gerardine, from Westport, describes her experience of travelling to London at the outbreak of war and her wartime experience.
Cpl Jack Geraty, 7 Cav US Army. Cold War warrior. Jack was a conscript soldier in the US Army in the 1960's. He describes is his basic training, his career as Military Policeman and his attitudes towards the affairs of the early 1960's.
